I’m bored, lonely and broke

10 things to do

We’ve all been there, poverty can breed isolation, as you struggle to afford to go to places where your friends go or do certain activities, this can affect your self-esteem and self-confidence. Below I list below some activities that are free or relatively cheap to engage in to beat the boredom.

  1. Have a picnic with friends.

Go to a park for a walk and bring a picnic. Get your friends to bring food as well. By the end you’ll usually have more food than you could have imagined.

2. Have a spa/health night

Face packs can be as cheap as a pound,  while many of us have friends that already have some form of holistic/beauty skill. Spend a night swapping skills,  do a guided meditation for your friends or listen to a guided meditation on you tube together.  Check out this sleep hypnosis  from Lucid dream expert and hypnotherapist Sarah Jane.

3.Fund raise for charity.

This is something I did which was a really rewarding experience. I raised over £100 for the charity refuge on their fundraiser 62 miles for refuge. You had to walk 62 miles in a month and  the money went to help support women and children trying to  escape domestic abuse. This fundraiser has come to an end now but there are plenty  fundraisers already set up, which means you can join a face book group which can be very supportive. You can also start your own fundraiser, face book has a page where you can set up fundraisers easily and quickly and invite your friends to contribute.

4. Volunteer

Volunteering is a good way of meeting people and improving your job prospects, helping your community and raising your self-esteem.   It can also lead to payed jobs with the company you are volunteering for. If you can’t find any volunteer groups, start up your own group. You can create one on the meetup website.

5. Art and craft

Art and craft supplies are often very expensive, so find ways of making art that is cheap. Paper mache, potato prints, use materials from nature such as shells and feathers and buy materials from charity shops or recycle material at home if possible.

6. Keep a diary or write a blog about yourself or anything that interests you.

This I have done myself and it has lifted my self esteem a lot. Its good for expressing how you feel and communicating your experiences as well as enlightening people on certain subjects.

7. Go swimming in the sea or river.

Swimming is excellent exercise, bathing in the sea has numerous health benefits, while wild swimming can be an endorphin booster. Remember though, don’t go in the sea if there is a red flag and if swimming in a river or lake avoid going in if you have the smallest cut or wound and take care not to swallow any water. Also do a risk assessment before you go in the water, only go in if it looks relatively still or slow flowing.

8. Fly a kite

This is a great activity to do on a windy day, especially if you have kids. The video below shows you how to make your own kite.

9. Travel abroad without travelling abroad

Going abroad can be expensive and often stressful.  Instead, have a weekend where you make it themed like a certain country. For example example, if you want to go to Paris. Play Parisian music, visit french restaurants, eat croissants and pan au chocolats for breakfast, drink French Wine.

10. Play with the occult

Do a spell, ritual, play with tarot cards or make a wigi board with friends. While you may not believe the spell actually works it can be a good way of changing you mindset  to think in a more positive way about the future, or spooking yourself if you’re bored! Just get some incense or aromatherapy and write out your own spells then make a special potion which could be a hot beverage such as coffee or hot chocolate or an odd smoothie. Making it bad tasting might well add to the illusion its a potion!
